Hi all, I'm on day 2 of my quit ,and trying my best to keep busy . I've been reading around the net on cannabis and it's effects .  I see a lot of sites, primarily those aimed at stoppping teens from trying cannabis, use the reason that cannabis is a gateway drug , eventually leading onto harder drugs . Although this is likely the case for some* people , the fact is gateway drug or no gateway drug , cannabis poses a problem on it's own . I for one never moved onto any harder drugs as a result of smoking cannabis, but that doesn't mean I escaped the negative effects on my life, purely from cannabis addiction .

It's time people realised cannabis addiction is a problem independent of leading onto harder drugs .

Well said.  I have a brother-in-law who is addicted to heroine - he thinks my problem 'laughable'.  Addiction is addiction when it

no longer becomes a "choice" but a necessity.

Now will you go to sleep already!!!! - I will talk to you tomorrow, uh, today  - should be Day 4 for you, whatever time it is!  (still Sunday here)

I think cannabis can be a gateway drug.  I am fortunate in that I've dealt with dealers that had little else.  I could have got ecstacy, speed and possibly acid, but nothing harder.  The whole 'gateway' theory is a good arguement for legalisation/decrim - to get people away from pushy dealers!

Actually, it occurs to me that on that logic surely tobacco should be seen as a gateway drug, I bet plenty of people start on that first.

But Cat is quite right about the dangers of Cannabis being understated.  One thing that annoys me about the 'legalise it lobby' (not that I'm against it), and almost certainly undermines their cause, is the almost complete denial that weed can be bad.

I've checked out a few of the 'legalise it' websites, and only a few take the trouble to draw people's attention to its potential problems, and even then it's often only in the 'small print'.

How often have I read that "cannabis is harmless" - I think this forum and others is more than enough to prove that wrong.

I think one of the reasons why it took me so long to recognise and admit that cannabis had caused such terrible damage to my life is this lack of acknowledgment that it can cause serious problems.

When I finally started to read forums like this, only then could I clearly see what it had done, perhaps if the dangers of cannabis in itself had been more widely publisied, then things might have been different.
